Spring is here! Time to break out the grill, get the family together, and enjoy some time under this beautiful North Carolina sky. Unfortunately, spring time means mosquitoes. While all know them to be pests, we’ve compiled a list of 10 things you might not know about these notorious blood suckers:

  1. Mosquitoes have an amazing sense of smell – Mosquitoes can smell the carbon dioxide exhaled by humans up to 75 feet away. This makes them extremely good at tracking us. Although they are expert trackers, spraying your yard can prevent them from biting you.
  2. Mosquitoes are picky – Some people are more attractive to mosquitoes than others. Our skin produces approximately 300 chemicals, although scientists don’t know exactly which are most attractive to mosquitoes, the preference exists!
  3. Mosquitoes saliva causes an allergic reaction – That red bump on your skin can be blamed on the properties of a female mosquito’s saliva, it induces an allergic reaction!
  4. Getting rid of standing water can reduce mosquitoes – Females lay their eggs in shallow water. Getting rid of any standing water around your home may improve your mosquito problem.
  5. Mosquitoes are the world’s deadliest animal – Surprised? Disease spread by mosquitoes is attributed to around 1 million deaths per year!
  6. Mosquitoes are greedy – Studies have revealed these little blood suckers are able to drink three times their own body weight in blood.
  7. Mosquitoes don’t live long – Mosquitoes have a very short life span, individual mosquitoes live around 2 months.
  8. Mosquitoes have a preference in clothing color – In some studies, mosquitoes were more likely to bite a host wearing darker colored clothing.
  9. There’s a variety of mosquitoes – There are over 2,600 species of mosquitoes, with over 176 distinct species existing in the United States.
  10. Mosquitoes have been around as long as dinosaurs – They have existed since the Triassic Period.
