Uncover the Signs of Cockroach Infestations

The German cockroach (Blattella germanica)

Cockroach infestations can develop unnoticed until their numbers become a significant concern, and the speed at which this happens can be alarming. Clark’s can help! Given their nocturnal habits, spotting these pests directly can be rare, as they often retreat to cracks, gaps, and crevices during daylight hours. Hence, it’s vital to stay vigilant for the following indicative signs:

Indicators of Roaches in Your Home:

  • Tiny Droppings: German cockroaches are known to leave behind small, dark droppings resembling coffee grounds. These can often be found in concealed spots such as kitchen cabinets, drawers, and behind appliances.
  • Musty Odor: A musty, oily odor serves as a clear indicator of a severe infestation. If you detect this smell in confined spaces like under sinks or in pantry areas, it may signal their presence.
  • Egg Casings: German cockroach egg casings, known as oothecae, are brownish and approximately 1/4 inch long. They tend to hide in crevices, behind pictures, or near electrical outlets.
  • Nighttime Activity: German cockroaches are nocturnal creatures, so if you observe them scurrying around at night, especially in your kitchen or bathroom, it’s a clear sign of their presence.
  • Hiding Spots: Roaches tend to favor tight spaces, retreating into cracks, crevices, and narrow gaps during the day. It’s essential to check behind baseboards, under appliances, and within wall voids.
  • Starchy Trails: Roaches emit a pheromone that leaves behind a starchy residue. Look for brownish streaks or smears along walls and surfaces.
  • Chew Marks: German cockroaches may leave small chew marks on cardboard boxes, food packaging, and paper materials in your pantry.
  • Shed Exoskeletons: As roaches grow, they shed their exoskeletons. Discovering these translucent, shell-like remnants can signify an infestation.
  • Unusual Pet Behavior: Cats and dogs may display unusual interest in specific areas if they sense cockroach activity. Pay attention to your pets’ behavior.
  • Inspect Your Belongings: German cockroaches often hide or “hitch a ride” within items introduced into your home, like the bags and boxes you carry inside.

How Do Cockroaches Infiltrate Your Home?

Cockroaches typically gain entry into homes by hitching a ride on infested goods, both food and non-food items. Corrugated cardboard boxes pose a particular concern as they offer numerous hiding spots and should be disposed of promptly. Any items brought into your home should be carefully inspected for signs of roach activity.

Roaches require food and water sources to thrive, so it’s crucial to pay special attention to inspecting areas in your home like the kitchen, bathrooms, and utility spaces where moisture is prevalent.

Practicing good sanitation is essential, as even small amounts of food debris and crumbs can sustain a roach population. Regularly moving appliances and cleaning beneath and behind them is crucial, as food debris and organic matter often accumulate in these areas. Eliminating the food sources of adult roaches is an important step, as the juvenile stages, known as nymphs, feed on the feces of the adults.

In cases of multifamily housing and apartment buildings, roach issues may originate in one unit and spread to neighboring units by following utility lines through wall voids. If you suspect this to be the case, you should contact the landlord or property manager to take the appropriate actions.

Prevention Tips:

Cockroaches reproduce rapidly, making early detection and action vital in preventing a full-blown infestation. Here are some proactive measures to keep your home roach-free:

  • Maintain a clean home, free of food crumbs and spills.
  • Seal cracks and crevices where roaches can enter.
  • Store food in airtight containers.
  • Remove clutter to eliminate hiding spots.
  • Promptly fix plumbing leaks, as roaches are attracted to moisture.

Understanding Roach Attraction: A Tale of Two Species

In the world of cockroaches, two of the most common species you might encounter are American and German cockroaches. Let’s delve into what entices each of these species to take up residence in your home.

American Cockroaches

  • Leaving pet food or water dishes out overnight, whether outside or in the garage, is a common oversight that draws American cockroaches into homes. Roaches, being nocturnal, are naturally drawn to the scent of pet food, which transforms into an easily accessible food source when left unattended.
  • Overlooking the repair of cracks and gaps in walls and doors provides enticing entry points for American cockroaches. These pests are known for their opportunistic nature and can infiltrate homes through even the smallest openings, all while seeking shelter and warmth. To ensure your home is roach-resistant, consider conducting a “light-leak” test on all exterior windows and doors.
  • Excessive clutter in basements or attics can create ideal hiding spots for American cockroaches. They thrive in dark, secluded areas and find refuge in clutter. Hence, maintaining a clean, organized environment is crucial in deterring their presence.

German Cockroaches

  • Inadequate food storage and leaving uncovered food items in the open can be an open invitation for German cockroaches. These pests are true scavengers and feed on a wide range of organic matter, making exposed food an easily accessible source.
  • Failing to promptly address water leaks and drips is another common mistake that attracts German cockroaches to homes. These roaches have a strong affinity for moisture, turning leaky pipes and faucets into prime breeding grounds.
  • Homeowners can unknowingly introduce German cockroaches into their living spaces through infested cardboard boxes, grocery bags, or secondhand furniture. To prevent this, it’s essential to inspect and clean these items before bringing them indoors, all while maintaining a clutter-free environment to reduce potential hiding places for these roaches.

How to Know if Your Hotel Has Bedbugs

Upon entering a hotel room, do you typically reach for the tiny toiletries, take a leap onto the bed, or perhaps start by inspecting for bed bugs? Knowing what to look for is essential. Anticimex Carolinas Service Manager Christian Tweed has shared valuable insights on identifying bed bugs in your hotel room and preventing them from hitching a ride back home with you. And if bed bugs do become an unexpected part of your vacation, remember that Clark’s Pest Control is here to assist!

Q&A with a Pest Professional

How do bed bugs get inside hotels?

Bed bugs are primarily hitchhiking insects as opposed to foraging ones, meaning that they get carried around on people’s clothes and belongings. Someone with an active infestation in their home can easily bring bed bugs to their hotel, but they can also be picked up during travel (airplanes, taxis, and rideshare services) and brought to a hotel room.

What do people misunderstand about bed bugs in hotels?

From a probability standpoint, all hotels will deal with bed bugs at some point in time. If you think about a bed bug’s method of travel, there’s literally nothing a hotel can do to stop them from being carried in. What I have realized is that luxury hotels are more likely to have an aggressive response to dealing with a bed bug case once it’s identified as they tend to have a higher quality of service and a reputation to protect. While this isn’t always the case, it has been my experience more often than not.

What do you recommend travelers do when they get to their room to check for bed bugs?

Most hotel headboards hang directly on the wall. I start my inspection here before even looking at the bed itself. I have found bed bugs, their exoskeletons, and the telltale black stains they leave behind around the edges of or in the crevices of headboards. If the headboard looks clean, move on to looking over the pillowcases and comforter for any signs or stains. You can dig into the bedding as deep as you want here, but I encourage people to look over the top layer of things at the very least.

What are some lesser-known signs of bed bugs in your hotel room?

The specifics of the black stains they leave behind, which as gross as it sounds, are just digested blood as that’s all that bed bugs feed on. If the stains are on a hard surface, they will be small dots as if left behind by an ink pen and will smear into a brownish gray when moisture is applied. If they’re on fabric, they will usually bleed along the fibers making a small diamond, square or X shape.

If there are bed bugs in your hotel room, can they travel home with you?

They absolutely can, however this is easy to prevent. While staying in a hotel, keep as much of your clothing and luggage off the beds as possible. Storing suitcases in the bathroom might sound odd, but it’s an effective method of prevention.

Don’t tackle bedbugs yourself, call Clark’s at 866-781-4991!

What should you do with your suitcase if you suspect your hotel has bed bugs?

When arriving home from a trip, leave your luggage in the garage or on a porch and bring your clothes in one load of laundry at a time. If the clothes are dirty, wash them like you normally would, if they’re clean then run them through the dryer for at least forty-five minutes. Once your suitcase is empty, vacuum over it meticulously (don’t forget to empty the vacuum when you’re done), or if you’re in the right climate, expose it to heat for a few days by placing it in your vehicle (parked in the sun) or for a few weeks in your attic.
