How to Use Essential Oils for Pest Control

You clean regularly, you set traps, you seal cracks in your walls – it seems like no matter what you do, pests are still finding ways into your home. If conventional preventative measures just aren’t doing the trick, it may be time to try something new! Essential oils are a natural, safe way to rid your home of pests that are a great alternative to pesticides.  So, what exactly are essential oils? Obtained through several different processes, essential oils are oils extracted from plants and contain aspects of their “essence” like the scent and chemical properties. Because they have been popularized by aromatherapy, many people don’t know that there are many more uses for essential oils, including pest control.

The Best Essential Oils for Each Type of Pest and How to Use Them

If you’ve decided that using pesticides just isn’t for you, try using essential oils! When purchasing them, check the label for ingredients. You want to make sure you’re buying the purest form possible, free of added synthetic chemicals.  Identify which essential oil you need based on the pests you have, then take the steps to rid your home of them.

Roaches: Eucalyptus, Tea Tree

Cockroaches are scavengers, they’ll look for food until they find it – which is why they make their way inside. Apart from just being gross, roaches can also be a threat to your health, as they’ve been known to carry certain diseases like Typhoid, Polio, and Dysentery.  There are two methods for getting rid of roaches. We recommend utilizing both: First,

  1. Find a spray bottle.
  2. Mix water with the essential oil. For every three ounces of water, add 10 drops of oil.
  3. Spray all infected areas to repel the roaches.

And second,

  1. Take cotton balls and douse them with the water and essential oils solution.
  2. Place the cotton balls in affected areas like inside cabinets, underneath the fridge, in the bathroom closet, etc.

Ants: Spearmint, Peppermint, Lemon

Ants are one of the most common pests around. They’re extremely tenacious, and their appearance in your home isn’t necessarily because it’s dirty, it’s because they’ll go anywhere they find food.  To eliminate ants from areas where you prepare food:

  1. Use a clean spray bottle.
  2. Mix ¼ cup of water with 15 drops of spearmint or peppermint oil and 7 drops of lemon oil and add it to the spray bottle.
  3. Spray areas such as kitchen counters, cabinets, fridge, etc.

Flies: Rosemary, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Basil

Flies thrive in filth. They can enter your home through open doors and windows and will lay eggs in decaying material like your trash or compost piles. Because of their nature to breed and feed in unsanitary places, they are known to carry diseases like E. coli, Cholera, and Typhoid.  To repel flies:

  1. Find a jar or container with a lid and a sponge.
  2. Place drops of any of the four essential oils on the sponge.
  3. Put the sponge inside the container, close the lid, and leave it for 12 hours.
  4. After 12 hours, place the jar with the sponge still inside in the affected areas to drive the flies away with the scent.

Mosquitoes: Peppermint, Citronella, Lemongrass, Tea Tree

With spring just around the corner, mosquitoes won’t be far behind. The biggest buzzkill for an outdoor gathering is knowing you’re going to wake up the next day covered in mosquito bites. Protect yourself and your yard with an essential oil solution! To repel mosquitoes:

  1. Find a spray bottle.
  2. Fill with 12 ounces of water, 15 drops of citronella oil, 15 drops of lemongrass oil, 10 drops of peppermint oil, and 10 drops of tea tree oil.
  3. Spray affected areas and drive them away with the scent.

Spiders: Spearmint, Peppermint

Certain types of venomous spiders like the black widow and brown recluse are found in the Carolinas, so you want to make sure these stay far away from your home.  Luckily, there are a few methods to ward off these potentially dangerous pests:

  1. If you know where they’re getting in, you can place an undiluted line of spearmint or peppermint oil along the crevice to keep them out.
  2. When you’re not quite sure of where they’re getting in, mix a spray bottle with 12 ounces of water and 15 drops of peppermint or spearmint oil to cover a wider area.
  3. Douse cotton balls with the mixture of water and your chosen oil. Place them in crevices around your home to repel the spiders.

Fleas: Lavender, Lemongrass, Peppermint

If you have any furry friends at home, chances are you’ve been concerned about fleas at one time or another. These parasitic insects feed on the blood of their host, most often dogs or cats, but can also bite humans. Using essential oils to prevent fleas is a natural and safe method to protect your home, yourself, and your pets! To prevent fleas on your pet:

  1. Find a spray bottle.
  2. Add 12 ounces of water and 15 drops of lavender, lemongrass, or peppermint oil to the bottle.
  3. Spray your pet’s coat once a week.
  4. Add 2 drops of your chosen essential oil to the shampoo you use to bathe your pet.

How to Know if Your Hotel Has Bedbugs

Upon entering a hotel room, do you typically reach for the tiny toiletries, take a leap onto the bed, or perhaps start by inspecting for bed bugs? Knowing what to look for is essential. Anticimex Carolinas Service Manager Christian Tweed has shared valuable insights on identifying bed bugs in your hotel room and preventing them from hitching a ride back home with you. And if bed bugs do become an unexpected part of your vacation, remember that Clark’s Pest Control is here to assist!

Q&A with a Pest Professional

How do bed bugs get inside hotels?

Bed bugs are primarily hitchhiking insects as opposed to foraging ones, meaning that they get carried around on people’s clothes and belongings. Someone with an active infestation in their home can easily bring bed bugs to their hotel, but they can also be picked up during travel (airplanes, taxis, and rideshare services) and brought to a hotel room.

What do people misunderstand about bed bugs in hotels?

From a probability standpoint, all hotels will deal with bed bugs at some point in time. If you think about a bed bug’s method of travel, there’s literally nothing a hotel can do to stop them from being carried in. What I have realized is that luxury hotels are more likely to have an aggressive response to dealing with a bed bug case once it’s identified as they tend to have a higher quality of service and a reputation to protect. While this isn’t always the case, it has been my experience more often than not.

What do you recommend travelers do when they get to their room to check for bed bugs?

Most hotel headboards hang directly on the wall. I start my inspection here before even looking at the bed itself. I have found bed bugs, their exoskeletons, and the telltale black stains they leave behind around the edges of or in the crevices of headboards. If the headboard looks clean, move on to looking over the pillowcases and comforter for any signs or stains. You can dig into the bedding as deep as you want here, but I encourage people to look over the top layer of things at the very least.

What are some lesser-known signs of bed bugs in your hotel room?

The specifics of the black stains they leave behind, which as gross as it sounds, are just digested blood as that’s all that bed bugs feed on. If the stains are on a hard surface, they will be small dots as if left behind by an ink pen and will smear into a brownish gray when moisture is applied. If they’re on fabric, they will usually bleed along the fibers making a small diamond, square or X shape.

If there are bed bugs in your hotel room, can they travel home with you?

They absolutely can, however this is easy to prevent. While staying in a hotel, keep as much of your clothing and luggage off the beds as possible. Storing suitcases in the bathroom might sound odd, but it’s an effective method of prevention.

Don’t tackle bedbugs yourself, call Clark’s at 866-781-4991!

What should you do with your suitcase if you suspect your hotel has bed bugs?

When arriving home from a trip, leave your luggage in the garage or on a porch and bring your clothes in one load of laundry at a time. If the clothes are dirty, wash them like you normally would, if they’re clean then run them through the dryer for at least forty-five minutes. Once your suitcase is empty, vacuum over it meticulously (don’t forget to empty the vacuum when you’re done), or if you’re in the right climate, expose it to heat for a few days by placing it in your vehicle (parked in the sun) or for a few weeks in your attic.
