Fight Mold In Your Home Naturally Using Essential Oils

Years ago, people didn’t care nearly as much about natural or organic at-home remedies. Nowadays though, homeowners are constantly looking for natural solutions for problems with their health and homes.

With that being said, you may be pleasantly surprised to know that there is a way you can naturally prevent mold using essential oils! Essential oils can benefit your life in many ways, but they can also help fight against mold and mildew in your home.

Before diving into the five essential oils that help prevent mold, we want to discuss the issues with mold, and where it may be hiding in your home. The more you prepare your home against mold and mildew, the lesser the chance you will experience mold damage in the future!

Ready to get started? Let’s go!

The Issue With Mold In Your Home

Mold is no joke! It can cause serious damage to your home and health—sometimes even resulting in truly terrifying mold damage nightmares. When mold goes untreated, it will continue to spread, and may even grow into black mold.

Mold, especially black mold, can cause detrimental health issues. The spores from mold can disperse throughout your home, and may cause symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, wheezing, and more. If the mold damage is bad enough, you may even end up with toxic mold poisoning.

Aside from the threats mold poses to your health, it can also be harmful to your home. When mold is present in your home, you’ll need to bring in a mold remediation specialist to remove, control and treat the affected areas—regardless of the extent of the damage.

Areas Of Your Home Where Mold May Be Growing

Mold can grow just about anywhere with the right conditions. If your home has high humidity levels or rooms with excess moisture, you may experience mold growth. However, you should keep an eye on the corners of your rooms, walls, window sills and even your attic and crawl space.

These areas are prone to excess moisture, so mold and mildew is more common. In order to protect your home from potential mold damage, consider using essential oils!

5 Essential Oils That Help Fight Against Mold

Essential oils can do wonders for your home when it comes to preventing mold. Here are five essential oils to diffuse in your home to fight against mold:

1. Cinnamon Oil

Cinnamon oil has been proven to be highly effective at preventing mold growth. Not only is it able to fight against the growth of mold on food, but also in areas of your home that may be prone to mold. Plus, the scent from cinnamon oil will help your home smell fresh and clean!

2. Thyme Oil

Thyme doesn’t just belong in your spice rack! Thyme oil is also extremely beneficial in preventing mold. More than that, thyme is also known for purifying skin and fighting off mold-related bacteria.

3. Clove Oil

Not only is clove oil full of antioxidants that will help boost your immune system, but it is also known to prevent—and even eliminate—black mold. As we mentioned earlier, black mold can cause insurmountable damage to your home and health, so you’re going to want to keep clove oil around!

4. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is antimicrobial and antifungal. This means that it can help disinfect your home while fighting off fungal growth like mold. For an added bonus, tea tree oil is also known to eliminate the musty odor from mold and mildew.

5. An Essential Oil Blend

To get the best of the best, consider trying a blend of the above essential oils. Their antioxidants and mold-fighting abilities will do wonders for your health and home! When you blend these oils together, you’re able to create a mold-fighting powerhouse you’ll want to keep around your home for future mold defense.

How To Effectively Use Essential Oils In Your Home To Protect Against Mold

Now that you know which oils work best for fighting mold in your home, let’s discuss the best ways to use these oils!

Diffuse Oils

For mold prevention, purchase a diffuser to spread these oils into the air around your home. Set out diffusers in the rooms of your home that may be most affected by moisture and mold damage. We recommend using a Nebulizing Diffuser because it doesn’t need water in order to operate.

Other diffusers require water in order to dispense oils into the air, which may result in more problem areas for your home. A nebulizer, on the other hand, will only diffuse the oil in its most pure form, without adding moisture to the air.

Continue to diffuse oils as you see fit. A diffuser can help treat early signs of mold, as well as prevent mold from growing. Oil diffusion is a great way to keep your home protected all year long.

Spray Oils

While a diffuser is more of a preventative method, you can also spray oils onto surfaces that are already affected by mold. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Prepare a mixture of around 25 drops of an essential oil—or an oil blend—with one cup of water and one cup of isopropyl alcohol.
  2. Pour the contents into a spray bottle.
  3. Spray the mixture directly onto the area affected by mold.
  4. Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes then wipe the space clean.
  5. Finally, repeat as you see fit!

It’s important to note that this mold treatment method isn’t always 100% effective. While these essential oils are useful for preventing mold, they may not be able to effectively treat mold that has already begun to grow.
